When you google “postmastectomy bra”, all the images that appear on the web are for two-cup bras. Unfortunately, if a tit has been taken from you, you already know this. If not, we invite you to check it out.
There are no single-cup bras like the one you can help us create.
And if they do exist, we haven't found them, there are only homemade fabrics like the one Idoia made for herslef. She's the person behind the “Tócate las tetas (Touch your tits)” initiative (https://www.tocatelastetas.com ) and the woman who has brought us here. Just like you.
One day we received a DM from her on our Instagram: “Hey, do you know any brand of one-boob bras? I'm losing it over finding one.”
Idoia had just gone through a radical mastectomy and she decided not to reconstruct, despite medical pressure. And no, we didn't know any brand that made such a bra, and we couldn't find it – we tried hard- either, so we decided to create it.
And here we are, accompanied by an incredible team of women, all set to give birth to the missing bra. While we're at it, let's make a bodysuit as well.
Equality is about this too, isn't it? Bras for everyone. Truly everyone. And that includes women who, for their own reasons, choose to go flat. Women who don't want to wear bras with prostheses or don't want to give up on the bra for the other lucky tit. There are plenty, so far, and these numbers only go up.
Descrizione del progetto. Caratteristiche, punti di forza e peculiarità.
1st. Research and design
We will conduct interviews with a group of mastectomized women and then, test materials (always sustainable) and designs. The final design will be based on their opinions and experiences.
For all this process we will collaborate with Noelia Morales, the wonderful creator of Anna Bonny (http://www.annabonny.com).
2nd. Patterns and development of LOLA's (bras and camisoles) samples
We will create the first patterns for testing sizes and adjustments to define the final tech packs and flat sketches for the product.
The first batch will include 30 bras (for lefties and righties, 30/each) 30 panties and 30 camisoles, all of them Made -with care-in Spain.
Our next step will be taking beautiful product photos for the online stores of Teta & Teta and Aniela Parys, and then more photos to feed our Instagram profiles and press purposes.
5th. Delivery and distribution
We will deliver around February/March 2020.
In the beginnings of the first phase, we will also start with the branding process: packaging, visual identity, a clear and informative website. At the same time we will devise a killer communication plan. “Make some noise” is our middle-name.
Motivazione e a chi si dirige il progetto
This campaign marks a new step on the necessary path for the desexualization of the breasts.
This campaign is addressed to every women, but especially, for those women who proudly stand by their scars, women who don't believe that femininity is something that can be automatically removed or reconstructed. Women who have struggled to overcome these prejudices and have redefined - or are still trying to redefine - what a complete and sexy body is. Like our Idoia.
The Lola bra will become real thanks to:
1. Aniela Parys (https://anielaparys.com), a slow fashion lingerie brand who joined us from the very beginning and accepted the challenge to create our single cup bra <3. Aniela Paris works with organic cotton, linen, bamboo, recycled fibers and leftover materials from other industries in Barcelona.
2. Noelia Morales, the woman behind Anna Bonny (http://www.annabonny.com), a brand of amazing mastectomy patches we can only revere and admire. Noelia is an essential part of the Lola project. In other words: she's been there and done that. She's got the map, we've got the legs.
3. teta & teta
We were born in 2013 as a creative coworking space. But in 2014 we created a t-shirt to grant a visual identity around the “tit” and, unwittingly, we became something more: an activist and feminist cluster that fights for tits (and women) freedom and equality, via creating social products and promoting militant initiatives.
We create Free the nipple products, with ethical ways and means (artisan production with ecological materials) to help desexualizing the tit and change a social environment that still doesn't (like Facebook and Instagram, with their absurd censorship policy over the female body, which we like to denounce on a daily basis).
Unlike Frank Zappa's album, “we are NOT in it for the money”.
So we decided to create a not-for-profit organization to wage this war, rather than to make a living. So we renamed our coworking brand to just one “TETA” and we're preparing a new website to distinguish clearly both sides of the work.
In 2017 we created Breastfeeding is Welcome Here (http: //breastfeedingwelcomehere.org) to help locate and promote pro-BF spaces that normalize breastfeeding in public.
In 2018 we created A las olvidadas (http://alasolvidadas.org), an initiative to collect books (personally selected and inscripted by ordinary people) to be sent to female prison inmates. We have delivered this books to five different prisons, four in Madrid and one in León. Here you can see a piece about the project in El País Semanal (a major weekend magazine from one of the leading newspapers in Spain): https://elpais.com/elpais/2019/02/27/eps/1551222821_569014.html
And, for several years, we are bringing attention about the importance of having your breasts checked for abnormalities, so you can get ahead of the drama. For us even one day counts, so every day is Breast Cancer Awareness Day around here at teta & teta.
