First of all, thanks to all of you who have backed us so far. Your support means a lot to us.
We have had a lot of feedback, and one thing that isn't clear to many people is how the Kibera Mesh relates to Libraries.
In Kibera, like in many places, space is limited and there are not nearly enough places for people to access information and resources that they can use educate themselves in knowledge and skills. It is also difficult for people to communicate effectively with other members of the community in order to find employment opportunitiies. The internet is a great resource, but the cost of downloading one video lesson can cost from 10 to 50 percent of the average daily income in Kibera.
A Mesh Network will create 'hotspots,' where anyone with a smartphone or computer can freely access educational resources, and take an active role in determing what goes on the network. They can create their own content and upload it to the network so that anyone with something important to share can do it without having to pay for the banwidth of accessing the World Wide Web. While most online content targets native English speakers, the content hosted on the mesh network will be dynamic and adaptable, so that the community can shape it to be more effective.
The needs of the community are best known by those who live in the community, and by letting them choose what materials and resources are available on the mesh network, they will be able to shape their own 'digital library,' which won't be bound by the constraints of requiring a secure, empty area in order for collaboration and learning to take place. All people will have to do is download the materials they want (free of charge) and then they can choose when and where to learn.
The Kibera Mesh won't create a traditional, physical library, but it will allow people with limited resources to access and share open content and open materials. It will allow them to come together (either digitally or physically) and collaborate on innovate ideas and projects. And what's most important is that since the content is all open, there isn't a limit to the number of people who can be learning simultaneously.
Again, thanks for all your support. Please share our campaign with others who might be interested, and don't hesitate to contact us for more information.
Best,
Tunapanda and Common Libraries
